Known as a drop cottage, this gable-roofed cottage was built in the early 1900’s by the Woods family. Originally situated on a property at Barmoya near The Caves township, north of Rockhampton, it was completely dismantled and moved to the Gangalook Museum site. The Woods Cottage has vertical slabs (hence the name drop slab cottage). It was then painstakingly rebuilt piece by piece, in 1978. The cottage seems to have undergone some renovation work, particularly to the outside wall panels and windows which would have originally been shutters. The interior of the cottage is rather rough and a reasonable reflection to the original construction. The most unusual aspect of the drop cottage is the floorless veranda – most buildings of this era possessed a raised veranda on the same level as the building’s floor. You will also notice the solid log ‘awnings’ coming down from the roof of the veranda to be quite unusual as well. Next to the cottage, you will also see the barn which came from the original property.
