The Kalapa School is located south-west of Rockhampton. After the original building was washed away in a flood, the existing building was erected in 1915. As a one-teacher school with grades 1-7, the school was able to remain operational until 1997 when the Kalapa community donated the school together with its fittings to the Heritage Village. Fascinatingly, Kalapa comes from the aboriginal word meaning wasp or hornet.
